March 17, 2009 Nick from BudgetGlobeTrotting.com Today we are featuring Nick, the founder and traveler from BudgetGlobeTrotting. 1. Tell me a little about yourself and where you are right now. I’m an undergraduate business student in at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. I love the news, international issues, economics and investing, being an entrepreneur, web development and the internet, and of course the idea of budget travel and living abroad. 2. I here you are studying abroad soon? I’m hoping to spend the fall semester at Thammasat University this upcoming fall, granted I get accepted. I’m really looking forward to everything about it - great academics, drastically different culture, and especially its low cost. 3. What trips did you plan to make while studying abroad in Thailand? I’ll be going all around Thailand, and I’ll definitely be heading overland to check out Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Living in Bangkok I’ll have great budget airline options which make every Southeast Asian country reachable like Malaysia and China, but I really want to check out India sometime during or after my program. 4. When and why did you decide to start BudgetGlobeTrotting.com? I started the site back in 2006 after I had the opportunity to travel to Spain and Morrocco in high school. Blogging was fairly new then and there weren’t many budget travel blogs around, and since I had already known some web design I figured I’d blog to explore and share budget travel opportunities. 5. What made you decide to study abroad in Thailand? My university has a good relationship with the school so I know that I will earn credits that can be transferred easily so my education plan isn’t interrupted, and initially I was attracted by the low price. After looking at the travel opportunities closer and reading about the country I knew it was right for me. 6. Any recommendations for other students thinking about studying abroad? Just do it. I have never heard one person tell me they regretted it. Also, when else in your life will you have the opportunity to live and travel abroad for half a year relatively affordably? It’s a great learning opportunity and it helps differentiate yourself from others when you graduate. 7. What is your next travel destination? Canada! I think I want to camp in Canada this summer before I head off to take part in my Thailand adventure. 8. Any recommendations for traveling on a budget? With some self discipline you can do it anywhere. I’d rather be able to spend an extra week somewhere on shitty food and cheap lodging than splurge and have to come home earlier. 9. Anything you cannot travel without? My iPod, obvi.
BudgetGlobeTrotting is a great website with travel gear reviews, travel website recommendations, and other neat articles and thoughts about travel.
